Message from the owner:
“From what I understand, most of these 1960s metal, backyard toys rusted from outdoor exposure and eventually ended up in city landfills. I have scoured the Internet looking for this particular toy manufactured during the 1960s and have been unable to find any exactly like this one. I was able to find a few somewhat similar toys (Miracle Merry Flier & Hedstrom Whirly Bird) also from 50 years ago, but none constructed or engineered exactly like this one.
I am one of the original owners, as it was a gift from my paternal grandfather to me and my 3 older brothers sometime around 1968, when I was two. My brothers and I played on this FUN, FUN “Whirly Bird” for hours and hours with our neighborhood and elementary school friends. It was hands down the most fun backyard toy but in 1976, when I was 10, a trampoline took its place and the whirly bird was disassembled, the parts wrapped in paper grocery sacks, placed in a box and hauled into the attic of my parents' home in Oklahoma where it stayed untouched until recently when I brought it to my home in Fort Worth, Texas.
Since bringing it to Texas, the only thing I have done to it is remove a very small amount of superficial rust on a couple of the pieces, primed the metal, painted the parts as shown in the photographs and reassembled it with brand new hardware (bolts, washers, nuts).
I have seen similar antique and contemporary concept toys called quite a few different names such as Miracle Merry Flier, Merry Go Round, Tilt A Whirl, Twirl Go Round, Whirly Bird, etc., but have not been able to find this exact model. Unfortunately but honestly, I do not know the name it was marketed under during that time. We always called it the whirly bird, but I don’t know where we got the name or why we called it that.
There are no markings of any kind on any of the parts that would indicate a manufacturer, which is somewhat frustrating when trying to find out its history from “invention” to advertising and marketing in the 1960s. However, I do know it is an authentic, antique & vintage fun, fun, fun backyard toy that has only had 1 owner-family and they kept it in mint condition. A truly rare, unique and nostalgic toy that accurately and undoubtedly portrays and represents those childhood days in the United States during the 1960s and 70s.
I hope it invokes huge smiles in all who see it and remember playing on it!
And, of course, for all who want to experience the hours of smiles, giggles, laughs, joy, happiness, fun and pure enjoyment it creates for their children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, or kids down the street, OR if you just want to have it for yourself, to smile and remember times of old, now is your chance to place your bid.......I wish you the best of luck!
Thanks very much for reading this small piece of my childhood history.”
